The grit of sandpaper refers to the number of abrasive particles per square inch. As the grit number increases, the fineness of the sandpaper also increases. This means that higher grit numbers indicate a greater number of smaller abrasive particles, resulting in a smoother and finer sanding finish. Therefore, a lower grit number, such as 60 or 80, would be coarser and more suitable for rough sanding, while a higher grit number, such as 220 or 400, would be finer and better for smoothing and finishing. **
